I work for Fortune 100 company and we are celebrating Diwali on Friday. There are flyers on all the corners and are expecting more than 500 co-workers for pot-luck lunch. And the best part, organizer and main activists are non-Indian. So its just another festival in the mix that everybody is looking to enjoy. This is our first gathering followed by 4-5 more before end of the year.

First it wasn't 1000, we had over 2000 people registered and many joined after or did not register. So please don't say 1000, it is extremely painful for everyone who attended to be considered as "not counted".
1. Politically having a rally in D.C makes it more visible for all the law makers there. Laws/amendments and all the political activity happens there. Rallies else where would make it to one or two news cycle but won't be remembered after wards.
2. Meeting lawmakers, staff from various constituents wrapped around an event like a rally helps a lot in getting the message across. It raises a lot of awareness.
3. I would have agreed with you that numbers like 100,000 matters, but after being there and seeing the amazing capabilities of IV to organize meetings and having members meet over 100+ meetings with law makers, staff, talking to to them, sharing personal stories, advertisement and media campaigns around D.C has convinced me that it has and will make a difference! Personally for me, it was an eye opener on how the system works and I totally understood exactly why IV leaders set it up this way just by being around and them for a few days!

Question gurus... I have a xerox copy of my approved I-140. Will this be enough to port the priority date? or do you need the original copy to be submitted along with the new I-140 application when you request portability of older priority date?? please clarify.

Trust me my friend, I have seen it happen all the time, from large Telecom firm to Govt., its always there, most of the consultants just doesn't come to know about it, but the cut for the managers is there in some form, almost always. Why do each manager has a specific vendor through whom they want to hire most of the time? What else is the reason for the client to pay the consulting company $180/hr but they won't give 'valueablehurdle' anything more than $50-60/hr?
On a different note, now that NSG approved the waiver, most desi uncles, some of them are also owners of desi consulting companies will claim that they are the father of Nuclear deal. These bastards (sorry for my french) always oppose any GC fix and they tell their favorite congressman/senator (each has atleast one favorite politician for whom they do fund raisers) that gc backlog is not an important issue for the community. India Abroad, Times of India, rediff and other desi portals/newspapers will write 'Oliver North' style stories about these desi uncles knowing well that companies like GE etc put their weight behind the deal as it will create commerce to commerce over $20 billion/yr. But desi uncles/orgs will not stop claiming to be the father of nuclear deal. The fact is, most of these desi uncles made noise not because they wanted to do something for their country of birth, they are doing it because they think that if the nuclear deal passes, they can play middle man for US companies to sell the technology/material to Indian companies/govt. Most of the so called 'united voice of Indian-Americans on the Hill' organization's goal is to make big bucks by playing 'middle man' for companies wanting to sell technology to India. And as always, just as 'valuablehurdle''s client (paying $180/hr) Indian govt. will pay double the cost. These desi companies have squeezed blood of people waiting for gc, but now they think its time to move on to play big game with the big boys. These desi uncles/orgs are going nuclear.... time for Rediff and India Abroad to play Oliver North. Sometimes the line between capitalism and cycle of corruption is extremely blur. The problem is, these desi uncles/orgs claim to be representatives of entire Indian-American community, sometimes the entire immigrant community. Lunch is supposed to be taken at cafeteria not at cubicles.It doesnt matter whether it's curry or burger.Both smell bad.
The project where I worked in the past does not have a cafeteria at all. All my friends/colleagues used to eat at their cubicles only. Is there some kind of unofficial rule that you have to eat at a cafeteria. I feel most small companies do not have a cafeteria. I've seen in different projects that I worked, most employees whether desi or somebody else ate at their cubicles only.

I did online MS degree and it took 3 years, although I could have completed it in 2.5 years. First year I completed only 1 course per sem, then I started doing 2 per sem. I took non-thesis option and the total cost was aprx 15K from ISU. Thye charge flat rate fee per subject ( aprx 3 credits) irrespective of residency requirements (you can actually do this course from anywhere in the world and it would cost the same) . This degree requires 30 total credits (one of them must be a project, so technically only 9 subjects/courses to take).

Whenever an attempt to increase visa numbers is made a budget point of order can usually be made. So, you will need 60 votes to amend the law.

Not really. Senators voted against this because they opposed the underlying amendment. The Democratic opposition stems from the facts that the amendment proposed to re-capture from all categories and then re-distribute accordingly to a Republican preference. For instance EB-3, numbers re-captured didn't all go to EB-3. The amendment gave 61,000 to Schedule A and then re-distributed the rest equally.
A much fairer, simpler and permanent solution is to simply rollover the unused numbers to next years numbers.
I believe there is around 300,000 unused visas from previous years. Even if 61,000 visas are gone to Schedule A, we would have got the remaining 240,000 visas. Imagine they are not even ready to pass the amendment which gives relief to Schedule A(extremely shortage workers) as well as employment catagories, think about the chances if the amendment stands only for employment catagories.

it might seem like eb2 has moved.. and it has from last month...but this is where we were at in april 2006 (may2006 bulletin -1st jan 2003) before the dates stagnated for a cupl of months, became unavailable and finally moved backwards in october.

One of my co-worker was in same boat. His desi employer revoked his I-140 when he took fulltime employement in 2005. He got his GC finally.
I am in same situation. As of yesterday, my previous employer would have revoked my 140.
I already sent the AC21 letter, there are no LUDs. My attorney says, chances that the letter may not go into the file are high and the reason we send AC21 paperwork is to keep a record that we sent. I took a screen shot of the DHL tracking info too.
Any ideas how to ensure that AC21 paperwork is getting into your file.
The answers I see on this forum is
(1) USCIS is overwhelmed with documents so mail can be trashed
(2) USCIS clerk does not know how to handle the paperwork
(3) USCIS certifying officer is not well educated about AC21

if you take your h1 renewal reciept they are suppose to give an interim date. I had the same problem in Columbus, OH.
H1 expired awaiting h1 renewal for 3 years (as I40 approved). First they denied. then i politley asked the DMV guy if he could drop me and pick me up and my wife from work everyday.
he asked me to get the renewal notice, letter from employee and intent to work further with the employee.
they gave me a 6 months dirvers licence.
and believe me, i dont think DMV guys know any happenings that impacts h1 guys. its the citizen law or illegal immigrant law and we get caught in the cross fire.
next time give them the immigrationvoice.ORG URL and ask them to educate themselves.

My wife has a H1 since oct 2006 till date she hasn't worked and hence has no pay stubs. her passport has a F2 visa. I want to convert her visa to H4. Her employer is asking for 6k to generate 3 paystubs for 3 months. I dont want to pay so much. if we go to canada to get H4 stamping will they ask for her pay stubs or just my pay stubs are enough.
Is there any chance of rejection. also can I go to canada for stamping or do i have to go to home country.
is there any site or posting that explains the process of applying for H4 in canada.

If someone enter USA they can bring in 10K$ with them in any form, ask you parents to go to any center in india private broker or anyone and buy $$ (thye charge some amount and that is in paise if they buy $ from you at 39 then they will sell it at 39.50 or so)

In short, what I am trying to say is members are doing what they can in these tough times. Definitely they can and will do more if we have some directions or flexible campaigns.
we have what we have in terms of participations, donations etc ..why not have an easier campaign (flower/letter) which will get maximum participation and also show that something is happening.
as for media campaign ..sooner or later more confident speakers will come forward (who knows ..maybe many present members are not confident speakers or media shy)
The problem that we (including myself) have is work life is more hectic and tense now, since layoffs are happening in front of our eyes. and hence if we have campaigns like going to DC or to go for media interviews ..it is very difficult.
